"In the late 1980s, the phenomenon known as raves spread from London and Manchester first to Britain and then on to the rest of Europe. Gavin Watson was there and documented the raves in 1989, the time when British acid house and dance culture were born. Gavin Watson was born in 1965 in London to a working-class family, and like many others of his kind, he became a skinhead. Aggression between gangs and subcultures ended in the late 1980s, however, and the battle axes were buries when a new movement was born: raves. Raving was a collective experience, it was dancing and music that brought together all young people from the suburbs, skins, teds and punks.

Gavin Watson's documentary photographs communicate an incredibly authentic feeling of the raves: dancing crowds, the joy of belonging, the lasers, the 1980s fashion, the warehouses and fields where raves were held, the DJs, the happy embraces in dark corners..."
